28. The new examination is controlled by a Syndicate under the Presidency 'ex officio' of the Director and the Chair- manship of an Inspector of English Schools. The Syndicate provides, by means of a roster, an Annual Board, consisting, in addition to the Chairman and the Senior Vernacular Inspector, of four heads of boys' schools (two provided and two Grant-in- Aid) and two heads of girls' schools, which is responsible for the arrangements for the year.

BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board of Education met three times during the year. The Hon. Mr. Leo D'Almada e Castro, Jr., B.A., Rev. Fr. G. Byrne, S.J., Ph.D., Rev. C. B. R. Sargent, M.A., Mr. A. el Arculli, and Rev. J. R. Higgs, B.A., whose terms of office had expired were re-appointed for a further term of two years. Sir W. W. Hornell, Kt., C.I.E., M.A., LL.D. resigned from the Board, and Mr. D. J. Sloss, C.B.E., M.A., was appointed a member on 9th December, 1937.

31. Mr. G. R. Sayer, B.A. acted as Director of Education from 1st January to 5th March, and Mr. W. Kay, M.A. from 6th March to 21st December, when Mr. Sayer resumed duty on return from leave.

32. Mr. C. G. Sollis, M.A., transferred from Malaya on 2nd October, 1937, was appointed Senior Inspector of English Schools.

33. Mr. B. J. Morahan was appointed from England on 4th June, 1937, to fill the new post of Physical Training Super- visor.

34. Mr. A. L. Potter was transferred to Hong Kong from Trinidad.

35. Arrivals from home on appointment were Miss 0. B. Green and Miss M. Smedley.

Mrs. E. M. Clark proceeded on leave prior to retire- ment in December.

38. The item "Miscellaneous" represented the difference between the full cost of tickets on the Kowloon-Canton Railway and the cost of cheap tickets for school children. The Railway Company now bears this difference.

39. The figures in Table IV show the financial assistance distributable to Grant-in-Aid Schools in 1938 in respect of 1937.
